This exposition celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal on August 15th 1914, with the passage of the S.S. Ancon. It was meant to tout San Diego as the first port of call to the United States for ships traveling north after passing through the canal into the Pacific Ocean.
Official Souvenir medals were struck on-site at the fair, these so-called dollars were struck in various compositions. The images that feature in this artical are Gold-Plated bronze (gilt bronze), reference HK-428 with a rarity R-4. The obverse features Uncle Sam with shovel, designed by Washington Atar Cartoonist C.K. Berryman, engraved by Charles E. Barber.
