Description

Sicily, Syracuse.

AR Tetradrachm, 485-478 B.C.

Archaic Period; Deinomenid Tyranny.

Obverse: Head of Arethusa right, archaic in style, wearing taenia, pendent earrings and two necklaces, with hair in straight beaded rows, surrounded by four dolphins swimming clockwise around.

Legend: ΣVRA-KΟΣ-Ι-ΟN

Reverse: A slow quadriga is driven by a charioteer to the right, holding reins and a whip. Nike is flying right above, crowning horses, all on an exergual ground line with a dotted border.

Providence: Ex; Otago Coin International.

Reference: Sear 913.

Grade: gFine-aVF.

Silver: 17.16g, 24mm, 3-3.5mm thick. Nicely toned with some colour on the reverse.
