A new theme started in 2014, 'Extinct species of New Zealand', the first creature to be depicted is the Kairuku which lived 27 million years ago and was 1.5m long when swimming and 1.3m tall when standing, a full 0.3m taller than it's modern counterpart the Emperor penguin.
The coins are 1oz of pure silver (.999) with a 40mm diameter and a worldwide mintage of only 1,500.
The coin was only minted in silver proof.
