Description

Nero A.D. 54 - 68.

Colonial and Provincial Coinage.

Region: Seleucis and Pieria, Syria, Antioch.

AR tetradrachm A.D. 61-62. Excellent portrait on this well stuck coin.

Obverse: Laureate beardless, youthful bust right, wearing aegis.

Legend: ΝΕΡΩΝΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΥ

Reverse: Eagle standing left, on thunderbolt, with wings spread; palm branch to left., H over IP (date) to the right.

H= regnal year 8. IP= year 110 of Caesarian era.

Silver, 15.13g, 25mm.

Grade: gVF.

Nero ruled Rome from 54 AD until his self - inflicted death in 68 AD. He was enthusiastic about art and sport, but his extravagances and vanity made him  unpopular.  His history is dark, with many murders, including family members and political opponents.
