Issued for Meritorious service and acts of bravery, or long service, the third highest award of the French Republic.
First established in 1852 by Napoleon Bonaparte.
The medal is silver with a laurel wreath, the profile of Marianne, the effigy of the French Republic surrounded by a blue enameled ring with the inscription "REPUBLIC FRANCAISE''. Reverse reads: VALEUR ET DISPLINE which in English translates Valor and Discipline.
Original medal swivel top section and ribbon replaced.
