Caracalla, A.D. 198-217.

AR denarius, struck at the Rome mint, A.D. 216.

Obverse: Laureate head of Caracalla to right.

Legend: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM.

Reverse: Serapis standing front, head to left, raising his right hand in salute and holding sceptrein his left.

Serapis was a major Graeco-Egyptian deity created by Ptolemy I to unite Greek and Egyptian subjects, later adopted by the Romans as a powerful god of healing, the sun, and fertility.
