Description

Thrace, Thracian Islands, Thasos.

Tetradrachm, 150-120 B.C.

Obverse:  Head of Dionysus right, wearing a wreath of vine and ivy leaves, with long hair.

Reverse: Nude Hercules, the lion skin flowing over his shoulder, standing left, holding a club in his right hand; monogram in the left field.

Reverse Legend: ΗΡΑΚΛΕΟΥΣ / ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ / ΘΑΣΙΩΝ (HERA LEOUS / SAVIOR / from Thasos or of the Thasians.

Broad flan, well centered both sides, attractive portrait, well-struck.

Silver, 15.5og, 29.5mm.

Providence: This coin is one of 30 coins found in an old school attic in Sunderland, Co. Durham, England in 1966,  there were 5 Roman and Greek coins, the rest are undecipherable and are in the Sunderland museum.

Identification was made by classical professor at Durham University G. Hugh, May 3, 1966.
