French military campaign medal awarded to those who served during the Franc0-Prussian War.
The war was declared by Emperor Napoleon III on Prussia in 1870 and ended in defeat for France.
The medal was awarded some 40 years after the conflict to veterans, it is belived some 150,000 were given out.
Obverse: Relief image of the effigy of the "Warrior Republic", a helmeted woman's bust wearing armour.
Reverse reads: "AUX DEFENSEURS DE LA PATRIE", (To the nations defenders), these words are superimposed over images of military weapons, an anchor and banner.
Bronze medal, 30mm diameter and engraved by Georges Lemaire.
Grade: VF, original faded ribbon.
