On a voyage to the South Pacific in 1642, the Dutch explorer commanded two ships, De Heemskerck and Zeehaan,
which sailed a wide arc to the south and east of New Zealand.Record has it that on 13 December 1642 the expedition sighted a large , mountainous land looming up to the south-east.
