Australian Trademen’s Tokens.

 

Following the gold rush in Australia in 1851, the population greatly increased and unofficial tokens Pennies and Halfpennies flourished.

The first token to circulate was produced by Heaton and sons mint in Birmingham in 1849 and issued by Annand Smith and Co Grocers in Melbourne, a later example from Annand Smith can be seen at the top right, the two tokens on the bottom left and upper right are both from Hide de Carle Grocers of Melbourne one with a stop after Victoria. The bottom right token is from a Sydney Merchant A Toogood in Pitt and King streets from 1855. All these quality tokens are available for sale.
